I'm submitting work to a book project with a poem about rape awareness featuring art by new england female artists under 30. Rape awareness, prevention, and healing is a subject which means a lot to me as a woman, a feminist, and the victim of an attempted rape last fall. I was lucky. For me, it was random, and I was able to leave. Not everyone is so lucky. I think it would be much worse if it had been someone I knew and cared for, in a situation that I could not just leave.
This is a broken dollar store doll shot in my bed. The symbolism are easy enough to work through. This is mostly dealing with the aftermath of a rape experience.
You'll be seeing a whole lot of doll related work from me in the next few months as a part of my very involved capstone work. It won't always be grotesque or disturbing, but it seemed like a place to start.
One Halloween I ripped Barbie's head off then melted a deep red crayon over her neck, dripping down her breasts, and a bit on the base of her head. It was awesome. You can steal that idea if you want...
On a related note, I had one friend who was raped by two guys at once, another who was raped by a brother, and my own mother was date-raped. It's both horrifying and shocking how common this is.
I would be interested in seeing more on this if you did decide to go further with this subject.
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
